The new building designed for the Biological Geography and Geology (BGG) faculties is located on the slopes of the north hills of Zagreb city.
Green “fingers” that descend from the green slopes of Mount Medvednica become an integral part of the project, “dissect” the volume of new building creating a series of smaller linear facilities, which stretch from north to south.
Linear objects “glide” along almost the whole plot also integrate within itself and greenery that take different functions inside and outside the building.
The new building is a combination of linear and matte typology seeking to better integrate and blend the green landscape. Green becomes the element that connects parts of the building and levels.
The new building of the Faculty of BGG as a starting concept started from the articulation of a complex program that is based on strictly defined functional facilities. Colleges are integrated as a single object but at the same time can function as independent units.
The new complex has a clear structure that can be layered and read it linearly, vertically and diagonally.
Diagonal system is composed of a number of public and semi-public spaces that connect the two height quotas, the main access road, lower vehicular access and along it are a series of events for all faculties and in some cases even open to the general public. This public core should also become a new gathering place of students from the nearby university buildings in which there is a lack of public and social content, and public space for reunion of students.
The system of ramps emphasizes the urban character of the building, and creates a continuity of pedestrian traffic.
The cross section shows a clear functional division of the object that is the eastern part contains the offices of all three faculties that are directly connected with the central part where there are spaces for research and professional work.
